College Football Review Week 10

Game of the Week: None

In the three years I have done my college football blog, I have never been faced with this predicament. Usually my love for college football allows me to shift through the tough weeks to find a silver lining, one game worth highlighting. However, this week, I need to be honest with myself…there was not a single game that was worth watching. Florida State and Miami ended up being a blowout (bravo Vegas) and Michigan vs. Michigan State did not live up to the hype of a rivalry game, as the Spartans won in ugly Spartan fashion.
This is was the first slate of November games, when rivals come together in big games to decide who is going to play in a “the” bowl game or “a” bowl game. So I was not going to just hand out the award this week because teams played in a close game. Its November! Games now are supposed to means something. So even though there were a couple of games that were close (Florida vs. Georgia, Notre Dame vs. Navy) those games featured teams who are out of the National Title picture, and the conference title picture.
And yes, the end of the Nebraska/Northwestern game was thrilling, but considering Northwestern is winless in the Big 10, the fact that Nebraska needed a Hail Mary to win the game just goes to show how unwatchable the game was.

Player of the Week: Anthony LaCoste, RB, Air Force (23 carries, 263 yards, 3 TDs)

So considering that this week’s games were boring to say the least, it would be a good idea to look outside the contenders to highlight a “Player of the Week”. Last year I had the opportunity to attend my first ever Army game at West Point, and it was one of the greatest sports experiences I have ever had. But what made it great was the fact that they played Air Force in part of the “Commander-In-Chief” trophy, and they were able to beat their rival. This year they didn’t do that, because of Anthony LaCoste.
His numbers were incredible, and despite the fact that Air Force runs a triple-option offense, where they run the ball “all the time”, the ability to run for 263 yards a game on only 23 carries, when the defense knows you are running…that’s pretty incredible.

Disappointment of the Week: Michigan

            -46 yards rushing
News to the Michigan Wolverines football program…your schedule only gets tougher.

Game of the Week: Thursday Night Football: Oregon @ Stanford, Oklahoma @ Baylor

This could potentially be the biggest day in College Football the entire season, and how bizarre that is will take place on a Thursday night. The Oklahoma/Baylor game will serve to be a semi-final game for the Big 12, as the winner will still have to battle Texas or Oklahoma State for the conference trophy. Baylor’s explosive offense will be center-stage as this will be the first time they will be in front of a national audience.
Oregon and Stanford has been one of the best rivalries the past couple seasons, as the Stanford Cardinals/Trees have seem to have found the recipe to slow down the Ducks offense and beat the ‘Neon Greeners’. If Oregon loses to Stanford, the power may officially shift over to Stanford for Pac-12 supremacy, but if Oregon is finally able to beat Stanford then you can count on the entire month of November to be about the three headed race of Oregon, Florida State, and Alabama (sorry Ohio State, that’s what happens when you realize you play in the Big 10 and still refuse to schedule anyone).
