Game of the Week:
Alabama-28 @ Auburn-34
If
the stars weren’t lined already for the Auburn Tigers, then this game was the
football-Disney equivalent of Jiminy Cricket singing ‘War Eagle’. Auburn
miraculously stormed back in the final minute to steal away one of the greatest
games in college football history.
While the story will, and should focus on the improbable punt return off
a missed field goal, the other story that will be talked about is the
questionable play calling by the best college football coach in the country,
Nick Saban. Whether he should of kicked a field goal at the end, or when they
failed to convert fourth down, either way Saban will have the entire off-season
to worry think about that. Knowing that…who wants to play Alabama next year?
Disappointment of
the Week: Fresno State
Derek
Carr completed 39 passes for 519 yards and 6 touchdowns; this recipe has been
the recipe for Bulldogs for success. However, this meal did not work out when
they played the 6-6 San Jose State, as Fresno lost 62-52, thus ending their
chance at BCS bid. Now the talk will focus on Carr, who has seen his draft
stock continue to rise throughout the season. Brother David ended up being a
bust in the NFL and the comparisons are going to be made, but as long as Derek
keeps posting these numbers, somebody is going give him a shot.
Championship Week
Preview
SEC: Auburn vs. Missouri
If
you placed a bet with Vegas in the beginning of the season that these two teams
would be playing in the SEC title game…you would have made enough money to buy
Vegas. These two 2012 bottom dwellers have made a miraculous comeback this
season and both will represent their SEC divisions in what should be a highly
entertaining, high scoring affair…very un-SEC like. But the Spread-Run vs. the
Spread-Pass will also be an interesting matchup. Gus Malzhan’s unique offense
is like a hybrid of a modern offense with retro philosophies as his spread run
attack offense focuses on just three plays. Sometimes I can’t help but wonder
if Chip Kelly runs his offense or Coach Boone from ‘Remember the Titans’.
Either way, it should be a fun game.
Prediction: Auburn 35,
Missouri 30
Big 10: Ohio State vs. Michigan State
Now
this game most likely will not be fun. Michigan State has a very good defense,
with a couple NFL caliber players, but Ohio State’s offense is way too high
powered and will overwhelm Michigan State as they have yet to face an offense
with this many weapons. I like Mark Dantonio as a coach, he is one of the most
underrated coaches in the country, but Urban Meyer is reminding the nation who
he is, and with Nick Saban’s Alabama out of the way, Meyer is one weekend away
from returning to where is most at home…the National Championship.
Prediction: Ohio State
33, Michigan State 10
Pac 12: Stanford vs. Arizona State
Stanford
had higher hopes at the beginning of the year, but they now are where they
intended to be, the Pac-12 title game. Arizona State on the other hand is
finally living up to their hype and have an opportunity to play for some
hardware. This game may not be as entertaining of an affair as the others, but
these are two programs with a lot to play for. Stanford, despite the
disappointments of the year, have now solidified themselves as top dog in the
conference, and want to stay there, whereas Arizona State wants what Stanford
has.
Prediction: Stanford
20, Arizona State 17
ACC: Duke vs. Florida State
I
will be lobbying all week long for Dick Vitale to call this game, because the
only think that could make Duke being in the ACC title game more exciting, is
hearing Dicky V’s voice booming throughout the day, rooting for a mega upset.
Because while Duke is playing the role of “Cinderella Man”, Florida State is
now the best team in the country and our one win away from the National title
game. And oh yeah, they also have the Heisman favorite Jameis Winston leading
the way.
And
is it just me, despite the controversy swirling around Winston, the gaudy
numbers, he is still flying under the radar. Johnny Manziel was practically a
household name at this point last season, despite the fact that Manziel was not
competing for a conference title let alone a National Championship. Winston,
who is doing both, still does not have reputation as his eventual Heisman
brethren.
This
game may look like the true version of David vs. Goliath, but there is no other
game that is more compelling.
Prediction: Florida
State 38, Duke 20
MAC: Bowling Green vs. Northern Illinois
Jordan
Lynch is good. Watch for yourself.
Prediction: Northern
Illinois 48, Bowling Green 28
