College Football Review Week 4

Game of the Week: Boise State vs. Fresno State

It was a terrible week of games for College Football, and the schedule did not provide one promising matchup, which is why there were some many blowouts. Far too many mismatches on Saturday which made it difficult to find a game of the week. Therefore I looked to Friday’s game, and that was good enough.
Boise State and Fresno State battled in a high scoring passing affair that only West Coast football can provide. In the end Derek Carr was able to lead the Bulldogs over the Broncos and secure the lead in the MWC. This unfortunately could spell the end of the Boise State legacy.

Player of the Week: Tyler Murphy, QB, Florida (8-14, 134 yards 1 TD, 10 carries 84 yards and 1 TD)

I refuse to give the nod of "player to the week" to any player who played any slob-like opponent this week. I’m sorry but Teddy Bridgewater’s line is just not impressive to me considering it came against Florida International, and the same can be said of any of Ohio State’s players, Georgia’s players, Florida State’s, Washignton’s, etc. etc.
So I am going to give this nod to one of the worst performances for a "player of the week" in all my years of doing the blog, Tyler Murphy. He had a very pedestrian line, against a second or third rate SEC team in Tennessee. However I think Murphy provided Gator Nation with a little hope. While QB Jeff Driskel’s broken leg is unfortunate I think it could be the best thing to happen to the Gators. They relied to much on Driskel’s hype on offense and it has continually come back to bite them in big games. His last play, the poorly read, pick six, was the perfect microcosm of his tenure in Florida. When Driskel made mistakes, they were huge mistakes and the Florida offense has just never been talented enough to make up for it. But with Murphy now calling the shots, the offense will be very ball controlled and his play-making abilities outside the pocket can give Florida an added dimension they have not had since Tebow. Now, he is no Tebow, but he does have alittle Chris Leak in him and don’t forget it was Leak who led the Gators to that first title.

Disappointment of the Week: Boise State

It seems the magical run for Boise State is coming to an end. Chris Peterson has lost a large part of his coaching staff in the past few seasons and he can just not recruit competitively enough to put a product on the field that can compete with the big boys. But not even I could predict Boise State would not be the best team in the lonely Mountain West Conference. Their inability to join the PAC-12 when Utah did, or the Big 12 is really killing this program. If I was Chris Peterson, I would be looking for the next challenge. And USC is that challenge.

Game to Watch: LSU @ Georgia, 3:30 PM, CBS

This week has a triplet of great games to watch with actual bowl game implications. Ole Miss travels to Alabama and the Runnin Rebs could give the Crimson Tide all they can handle in Tuscaloosa and Oklahoma travels to Notre Dame which should be more compelling than the “Sooner Flop” that took place a year ago when these two teams met. But the game to watch is LSU @ Georgia. Both of these top 10 teams come in with a lot of momentum and both are incredibly formidable on both sides of the ball. It is hard to tell who needs this game more. LSU is probably the least talked about team out of all the contending teams in the SEC (which is pretty hard to fathom considering the “mad hatter” is the head coach) and a statement win in Georgia could put the entire conference on alert. Georgia, on the other hand, needs a marquee win over an SEC West opponent if they are going to convince people they can win the SEC title.  This game will have hard hits, big plays, questionable coaching calls, and some of the best talent in the country displayed. This should be one of the best games of the year.
