College Football Review Week 8

Game of the Week: Auburn-45, Texas A&M- 41

It was only a matter of a time that Texas A&M’s defense, or lack thereof, caught up with them in the SEC. Of course it did not help that Johnny Manziel left the game with a shoulder injury, but no matter if your QB is “Johnny Football” or Johnny Unitas is quarterback if a defense gives up 379 on the ground…you are going to lose. What helps the Aggies is that LSU lost, but since Alabama took care of business, it is going to take a lot for the Aggies to win a chance to go to Atlanta to win the SEC. With all of the talk of Sumlin being a heavy candidate to go to USC, look for Johnny to exit early to the NFL. His gritty/gutsy performance should only enhance his stock.

Player of the Week: Jeremy Gallon (14 catches, 369 yards, 2 TDs)

Ridiculous at any level, for a receiver to have over 300 yards receiving it just unheard of, no matter if it is at 1-A, 1-AA or high school for that matter. Considering the fact, that Randy Moss, who played in the MAC at Marshall never replicated these stats, for a receiver of Gallon’s stature (5’8’’, 187 lbs) is even more impressive just in stature. The Michigan offense has been inconsistent at best, but Gallon’s contribution has been the one bright spot throughout the season. But for him to have a game like this, is nothing more than a breakout, and NFL scouts should take notice.

Disappointment of the week: SEC Pretenders

Texas A&M, LSU, Georgia, Florida were all serious contenders going into this season for the SEC title.  But all loss, either at home or on the road, to less than stellar opponents, in pretty pathetic fashion. Georgia has been unable to respond after the hard fought win against LSU, LSU has been able to recover from the loss, Florida has zero offensive production, and A&M can’t defend a single team below the Mason Dixon line, and I am including all high school teams. I believe this weekend has symbolized that the SEC, in terms of a conference, has come back to the rest of the pack. While they are still the best conference, all of the above teams are pretenders at best.

Game to Watch: #21 South Carolina @ #5 Missouri

Who would have thought that the SEC East title would have been decided by this matchup? Missouri just keep destroying every SEC East contender in its path (both Florida and Georgia in back to back weeks) and if they can do it one more time they will have all but locked up the title with a home win against the Gamecocks. Expect and underrated home environment in Mizzou to propel the Tigers into an opportunity that no one wold have guessed.
