College Football Review Week 1

Game of the Week: Clemson vs. Georgia

There were a slew of excellent games this weekend. Thursday night offered three instant classics, Ole Miss vs. Vanderbilt, Fresno State vs. Rutgers, and one of my new favorite rivalry game, Utah vs. Utah State.  Then you have all of the FCS schools pulling off major upsets this past weekend, its hard to distinguish which one was better (although UCONN does deserve honorable mention for disappointment of the week with their loss to Towson).
But I think the projected game of the week, actually deserves to be called the game of the week. Here you had two top ten teams really play up to their ranking. But what I think really makes it the game of the week was that the stars really came out to shine. Tahj Boyd made me look really brilliant this week by naming him the best player in the country (18-30, 270 yards, 3 TDs, Rushed 11 times for 42 yards and 2 touchdowns), and after banging his knee Gurley made NFL scouts drool with 12 carries for 154 yards and 2 touchdowns!
The game was thrilling from start to finish, the only real downside of the game was having to hear Brent Musburger ask time and time again “Do you believe in Clemson now?”. To tell you the truth Brent, I think anyone who typically does not believe in Clemson had changed his or her mind after the game. The problem with Clemson isn’t that they cannot win the big game; it is when are they eventually going to lose that one game they should not? Only time will tell, but for now Clemson and Georgia gave us a great game to kick start the college season.

Player of the Week: Baker Mayfield, QB, Texas Tech, 43-60, 413 yards, 5 Total TDs (1 Rush)

There were a lot of star college players who had great weeks but this true freshman, walk-on player deserves the nod this week. Having received virtually no offers from any FBS schools, Mayfield walked on to Texas Tech and new coach, and form Texas Tech great Kliff Kingsbury gave the Texas standout a chance and he really stepped up against SMU.
Granted SMU does not boost a stellar defense, and anyone who throws the ball 60 times should be able to throw for over 400 yards, but Mayfield had great pose in the pocket and a great command of Kingsbury system, who don’t forget, was the same system Johnny Manziel ran a year ago at Texas A&M. Kingsbury left Texas A&M to take his first head coaching gig at his alma mater and the Red Raiders look to be a very entertaining team in the Big 12.
If Texas Tech is going to contend in the Big 12, Mayfield is going to need to continue this production. Be sure to check out TTU’s, Thursday night showdown against TCU on September 12th. We may be witnessing one of the best stories of the college football season and Baker Mayfield would be the star.

Disappointment of the Week: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M

After one of the most disappointing and embarrassing offseason of any Heisman winner ever, Manziel was able to actually raise the bar for revving up his detractors. Manziel had an electric second half performance against Rice after serving his putrid 1st half suspension against the owls. But what took place after each electric play is what wins “Johnny Football” this week’s nod. The trash talk, the money gestures, and then even worse the “signing autographs” taunts, by Johnny himself was truly disgusting.  It seems as if Manziel is regressing in terms of personality and maturity, two traits no team would want to see their star quarterback lose a grip of.

Game To Watch: Michigan vs. Notre Dame

No rivalry has provided more great games in the past five years than Michigan-Notre Dame. This year promises to be another classic as both teams are top 20 teams with big bowl game potential, possibly even national championship contenders. Both teams were semi-impressive in the first game this week. Tommy Reese displayed great accuracy and big play potential when connecting to TJ Jones and Junior DeVaris Daniels displayed talent that can be compared to forming Irish great Michael Floyd. For the Wolverines, QB Devin Gardner displayed his athleticism throwing for a couple touchdowns and running for another two and both teams showed the that their defense has a lot of potential as well.
The average margin of victory between these two classic programs is 4.75 points in the last four years. This will be the second to last time these two rivals meet as Notre Dame is adopting more of an ACC schedule, so expect this game to be an intense, hardly fought game by both sides and that should provide another great matchup.
