Game of the Week: Florida
State 31, Notre Dame 27
In
what was the most intense, hotly contested game of the season, the Seminoles
managed to escape the Irish in the last seconds to continue the Jameis Winson
and Florida State saga. While there were dozen of storylines that took place
prior, during and after the game, the one story-line that fans should take away
from this game is that Notre Dame is indeed very good. It seemed that many experts did not
give the Irish much of a chance after their 50-45 win over UNC a week prior,
but Notre Dame answered the bell and was one bad play or one bad call
(depending on your perspective) from beating the best team in the country. While
Notre Dame is probably out of the playoff picture (but not completely), if they
win their remaining games, Notre Dame will have had one very successful and
improbable season.
Florida
State’s journey continues and with the rest of the schedule resembling a piece
of chocolate cake, Florida State seems to have locked up a playoff berth with
last night’s win. But with the Winston drama continuing, it seems that the NCAA
or Florida State themselves may be the only one’s who will knock out Florida
State from the playoff. Stay tuned.
Player of the Week: Kevin
White, WR, West Virginia (8 receptions, 132 yards, 2 TDS)
West
Virginia had the upset of the week, defeating the fourth ranked Baylor Bears in
Morgantown, but in a game that featured Bryce Petty and Shock Linwood, it was
Kevin White who was the best player on the field. His one handed, game winning
catch was a symbolic moment in which White, a product of a pass-happy offense
(much like Bryce Petty), not only has the numbers but the actual skills that
NFL scouts will drool over. While these Big 12 offenses seem relatively similar
(in that they all want to throw the ball 50 times a day) it is difficult to
make a statement when everyone’s numbers are inflated. However Kevin White’s
ability and style of play, soared above everyone else. Including…
Disappointment of the
Week: Baylor
It
seemed like only last week that I was praising Baylor and star quarterback
Bryce Petty. It seems that way, because it was, but now I am over them. Its not
that I am backing off the idea that Bryce Petty could be a good NFL QB, which I
still believe he can be, he just needs more time to develop. Petty can throw
the ball downfield, and likes to take chances, but he needs to learn how to
take over the game, and control the ball. Baylor was winning this one against
the Mountaineers in the 4th quarter, and good teams, with good
quarterbacks hang onto these victories. Say good night to the Big 12.
Game to Watch: No. 9
Oregon @ California, 10:00 pm, Friday Night!
I
know this does not seem like an ideal “Game to Watch” and most people rather be
out and about on a Friday Night, rather than hurrying to the T.V. to watch one
of the most celebrated teams in the Pac-12 to one of the biggest black-eyes in
the Pac-12, but this one could prove to be a great game. This will be the
Golden Bears, biggest game of the year, and that will equate to high energy,
home-field advantage, moxie that could catapult the Bears into a possible upset
(Could be an upset?). Cal Quarterback Jared Goff has been one of the best kept
secrets in the country, tossing for 24 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions, and
this could be the game that everyone learns who this kid is (Sounds like a
trap). And to top it off, Oregon has a short week to prepare for Cal, and the
following week Oregon will be set to play Stanford the following week. Ok…It’s
a TRAAAAPPPP!!!!
Coach on the Hot
Seat: Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern
It
just continues to get worse and worse for the Wildcats. Up 17-14 at half
against the 19th ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers, but in the second half
Nebraska scored 24 unanswered. Time to throw a grenade on this program…and Pat
Fitzgerald needs to lay on it.
Playoff Prediction:
1. Florida State
|
2. Oregon
|
3. Mississippi State
|
4. Alabama
|
1. Florida State: Another
week, and another win for Florida State, but this win against the Irish cements
the fact that they are number one, and that is not changing anytime soon.
Seriously look at their schedule.
2. Oregon: An
impressive win for Oregon? Sure. But that Stanford game in two weeks looms in
the shadows.
3. Mississippi State:
They are still the hottest, most complete team in the country.
4. Alabama: They
still have to beat Mississippi State, LSU, Auburn, and win the SEC title game
in order to get into the playoff which is a tall order to ask of anyone. But
Alabama reminded every yesterday in their 59-0 victory over Texas A&M, that
if anyone can do it, it is them.
Don’t Count Them Out
Yet: Georgia & Ohio State
Georgia
keeps winning, and their schedule is favorable that they can win out until the
SEC Title game. They manage to keep doing this without Todd Gurley, and when or
if he comes back this year that could prove to be a huge boost. He would be the
ultimate X-factor in the SEC title game no matter whom the Dawgs would face.
And
Ohio State will just not stop. It seems as if every week now they can put up
30+ points. Still have a lot of work to do however.
