Story of the first round: QB Blake Bortles to Jacksonville
Rumors
swirled a week ago about Houston possibly trading their pick to the Buffalo
Bills, and while there seems to be little traction with this development, one
thing is clear, that the Houston Texans seem have to have no intention on
drafting a quarterback with their first pick. It would not make much sense for
them to want to trade down and hope their signal caller of the future is there
in the first round. So if they are unable to trade the first pick, which seems
to be the case so far, they will select the best player in the drat, and that
should be Jadevown Clowney.
But
if that happens I believe the Jaguars will be forced to select a quarterback.
Manziel may be the sexy pick, but conventional wisdom has them selecting
Florida native Blake Bortles. It’s the safer pick, and Bortles played his ball
in Florida, so there is a connection with the home base there and should be
able to attract people to Jacksonville.
Steal of the first round: WR Mike Evans to Pittsburgh
Big
Ben has really missed having a big physical wide receiver in Pittsburgh since
the departure of Mike Wallace, and if Mike Evans falls to Steeler Nation at 15,
that would be an absolute steal. Evans has all of the physical traits and great
hands that make him an ideal game changer that Pittsburgh has not had in a very
long time.

Story of the second round: 2nd Tier QBs off the
board in Round 2
After
four quarterbacks (Bortles, Carr, Manziel, Bridgewater) are off the board in
round 1, teams will not hesitate to select a quarterback in the second round. Another
four quarterbacks will be selected in the 2nd round as well (Savage
to Tennessee, Garoppolo to St. Louis, Mettenberger to Kansas City, McCarron to
New England). Tom Savage has emerged in private workouts for teams in the past
few weeks. His size and arm strength may be the best in the draft, and
Tennessee may not be sold on Jake Locker who has proven to be inconsistent more
than anything else. Garoppolo could also make a run at the starting job in St.
Louis, where coach Jeff Fisher is trying to give incumbent starter Sam Bradford
as many weapons as possible (signed Kenny Britt to go along with Tavon Austin),
but if Bradford cannot stay healthy or emerge as the 1st round
talent as the Rams had hoped, he will be on the way out in St. Louis.
Mettenberger and McCarron, two of the more polished quarterbacks in the draft
will be selected as possible successors to veteran quarterbacks Alex Smith and
Tom Brady.
The steal of the second round: LB CJ Mosley to Buffalo
There
is not much of a need for a middle linebacker in this year’s NFL draft but
there is little denying the talent, leadership and production of CJ Mosley. The
Bills had one of the steals of the draft a year ago when they selected Kiko
Alonso in the 2nd round, who ended up leading the team in tackles
but the Bills envision Alonso being more of an outside linebacker. Mosley fits
the mold of the ideal middle linebacker and if he fell to Buffalo, the lowly
Bills would sport the best front seven in the AFC East.
