Story of the first round: Dallas trades up for Johnny Manziel

The Cowboys have just recently given Tony Romo a new contract, a six-year 108 million dollars, 40 of which is guaranteed. But as much as many may not want to believe it is possible that the Cowboys trade their franchise player, owner Jerry Jones can tolerate another 8-8 season. The Cowboys have another brutal schedule, as was revealed on Wednesday night and they have made no significant offseason maneuvers. With the exception of losing their best defensive player in Demarcus Ware, the loudest move Jerry has made was signing Cleveland Brown castoff, Brandon Weeden. To make it short and simple, Jerry is primed to make a big move at the quarterback position…and I am not talking about Brandon Weeden.

So here is how it happens:

Tampa Bay: Gets QB Tony Romo, and the Cowboys first round pick (16th overall)

Dallas: Gets: Gets the Buccaneers first round pick (7th overall)

Cowboys Rationale
Every team in the NFC East has made some sort of significant offseason move with the exception of the Cowboys. Nothing would rectify this situation more than getting the most highly touted player from the state of Texas than Johnny Manziel. Let’s face it, the Cowboys, even with the surplus amount of talent they have had, have been one of the most snake-bitten teams in the league. Can you think of a better way to reverse the Cowboy curse by snatching the ideal Texan quarterback? Regardless, Jerry Jones would have people talking about the Cowboys once again, and at least in the beginning, it would be about something positive and exciting.
Also, this is not as bizarre as many people may think. Remember, it was the New England Patriots who traded Drew Bledsoe in 2002, who just a year earlier, signed a-102 million dollar deal. The Patriots of 02’ and the Cowboys of ’14 are teams of different circumstances, but to say a deal could not happen because of the contract is untrue.

But would Tampa be able to take on this large contract?

Buccaneers Rationale
They are currently 13 million dollars under the cap. In order to be able to afford Romo they would need to clear another 4 million dollars, which they could simply do but just cutting, they newly acquired Josh McCown who would then become unneeded by acquiring Romo. The year after that the Bucs are more than fine as they will be almost 20 million dollars under the cap even with Romo’s contract (http://espn.go.com/blog/tampa-bay-buccaneers/post/_/id/4160/bucs-are-13-million-under-cap). So economically the Bucs may be the only team that can make this happen.
The Buccaneers have been setting smoke screens by leaking they are interested in Johnny Manziel, but drafting the less than surefire Hesiman winner does not match with the strengths of new head coach Lovie Smith. He may be a brilliant defensive mind, and an excellent players coach, but developing a quarterback is not his thing. During his tenure with the Bears, year in and year out the Bears would not commit to building a “quarterback of the future” and I doubt the Bucs brought him in, to draft a quarterback and go down that road. Lovie has won with the likes of Tony Romo and Kyle Orton. If the Buccaneers have ambitions of making Tampa back into a Super Bowl caliber team, Tony Romo would be the quarterback that could take them there.

Tony Romo Rationale

The guy is in a desperate need of a change of scenery. Tampa Bay would offer Romo a lot less pressure, less focus, less heart-ache, and less likely of a chance of having a reality show on the Bravo Network. Under Lovie Smith, Romo would have a head coach who can run and most likely produce a top 10 defense, which would continue to take off even more pressure off his shoulders. There are a few weapons already in the Bucs offense arsenal, and even more if Doug Martin can return to form, the division is not as brutal as the NFC East, and Tony Romo’s story may be able to change for the better.

Story of the second round: Teddy Bridgewater falls to the 2nd Round

There are so many people on this development that it is impossible to ignore. Bridgewater has plummeted an epic rate because of his poor combine and pro day performances, and too many are concerned with his accuracy and velocity. Bridgewater looks to be the Geno Smith of ’14, but it may not be all that bad for Bridgewater if this scenario played out. He would be hooked up with Bill O’Brien a well-known quarterback guru who could fix a lot of the same problems that Tom Brady had when he came out of college. But if Houston decides to pass on Bridgewater in round 2, and with the rumblings that Jacksonville really like Jimmy Garoppolo, it will be interesting, and for Bridgewater stressful to see where he ends up.
